Russia Announces Plans for Permanent Moon Base

As was first reported by Russia’s International News Agency (RIA Novosti), on November 6th 2018, Dmitry Rogozin of The Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities, Russia’s National Space Agencyannounced new plans to begin building a permanent inhabitable base on the moon by the year 2031. The idea Rogozin said, is to “программы планирует создать на поверхности естественного спутника Земли долгосрочную посещаемую базу и изучать Луну с помощью роботов-аватаров.” Explaining that Moscow fully anticipates the program to be much larger than anything we have seen throughout history, including the US’s Apollo missions of the 60’s and 70’s.

According to the report, Moscow doesn’t have an exact definition of how long this new project will take, but fully expects to have its first cosmonauts landing on the moons surface sometime between the year 2030 – 2031. According to Rogozin, the primary mission objectives are to explore the moon in hopes of “использования лунного грунта в качестве материала для 3D-печати деталей для ремонта космической техники прямо на Луне,” while attempting to “как говорят в Академии наук, использования гелия-3 как основы для ракетного топлива.

While the report didn’t get into much detail, the general plan of the operation is to deliver different forms of robotics onto the moon that can either be controlled remotely from Earth, or through a central operating point/base located somewhere on the moon itself. Then, using these robot avatars, Moscow intends to search/probe different areas of the moons surface in hopes of finding new resources or making scientific discoveries. Moscow said it is not their intent to man their base year round, but intends to erect a long-term shelter that can be visited regularly by cosmonauts throughout the foreseeable future.
