How to clean plastic garden furniture

Plastic chairs and tables are common in many gardens and patios in France. They are cheap and very weather resistant, and you can find them in different models and colors. Summer is coming, but how do you clean plastic garden furniture?

Cleaning this garden furniture is not difficult, but if they are left outside all year round (it’s good to stack them and cover them so they last longer) it is possible that they have stains or have lost their color. Cleaning should be done once a week, but as it is sometimes forgotten throughout the year, it is recommended to cover it with a plastic cover to protect it.

COMPLETE CLEANING

If the plastic furniture has not been cared for and is heavily soiled. For cleaning you need

A small plastic container A plastic bucket A non-scratch scouring pad (one of those blue pads)

Cif type cleaning product. This type of product is very versatile as it can be mixed with water to obtain a cleaning paste that will remove the most stubborn dirt. We save time and money

If you have the ability to use a hose, it can be very useful for initial cleaning and final rinsing.

cleaning procedures

In the small plastic container, add a little Cif cleaner or powder and very little water. Use the blue scouring pad soaked with this mixture on the plastic table, chairs, or furniture. You’ll see it remove deep-seated dirt, even stubborn dirt like bird droppings that tend to stick to the table.

First scrub the entire table with a scouring pad and leave the product on for at least five minutes; then rubbed again:

In the plastic bucket, prepare the water and rags. Start with a damp one and wipe the area you previously rubbed. Remove any product residue. Dampen the cloth and wipe it off. Drain it in the water and wipe again.

The water will come out very dirty, change the water and rags.

For stubborn stains, leave some cleaning paste on the stain and wait. Then work with a spatula, being careful not to scratch the surface.

If the plastic has been exposed to sunlight and chemicals (e.g. bird droppings leaving acid stains). These stains cannot be removed, you can try to camouflage them with fine grit sandpaper, but the shine will be lost. If they are on the seat or backrest, you can hide them with a pillow, otherwise you can paint them with a paint suitable for plastics.

BASIC CLEANING

If the furniture has been cared for or covered all year round, the accumulated dirt will be easier to clean.

You need the same as before, but the procedure will be faster.

Cif or powder detergent Non-scratch scouring pad Plastic container Plastic bucket 1 or 2 cloths.

The procedure is the same as deep cleaning, except that the furniture will not have any stuck residue or too many stains. We will therefore rub over the furniture with the scouring pad impregnated with cleaning paste (or Cif). If it is important, rub it over the entire surface and then rinse section by section with the cloth soaked in water.

If you have a hose, give it a final rinse with water and let it dry.
