SR-22 Insurance- What is it and how does it work?

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a document that certifies a driver’s financial responsibility as required by their state or court order. An SR-22 is paperwork that is submitted to your state, not a real “kind” of insurance. This document serves as evidence that the minimum liability coverage mandated by state law is met by your motor insurance policy.

What is an FR-44?

In that it demonstrates that a driver is in possession of active liability insurance that satisfies or exceeds the state’s minimum high risk coverage requirements, an FR-44 is similar to an SR-22 form. The liability standards of an FR-44, however, are typically higher than those in SR-22 minimum coverages or state minimums.

Is an SR-22/FR-44 necessary?

Not everybody requires an SR-22 or FR-44. States all have different laws. It is typically only necessary by the court or needed by the state for specific driving-related violations. DUI convictions, reckless driving, and accidents with uninsured drivers are just a few examples.

The courts or your state’s motor vehicle department will let you know if you require an SR-22/FR-44.

Is there a fee associated with an SR-22/FR-44?

You must pay this one-time fee when we file the SR-22/FR-44; most states have flat fees, but some impose surcharges. You will only ever be required to pay more if your coverage expires.

  • Each SR-22/FR-44 that we submit requires a filing fee. The filing cost will be charged twice, for instance, if both you and your spouse need an SR-22/FR-44 and your spouse is included in your policy.

Please be aware that because the filing fee can change, it is not included in the rate quote. You’ll learn about this price at the time of purchase.

How long is the SR-22/FR-44 valid?

For as long as your insurance high risk coverage is in effect, your SR-22/FR-44 should be valid. We must inform the appropriate state authorities if your insurance policy is canceled while you’re still required to carry an SR-22/FR-44. You risk losing your ability to drive if you don’t keep up continuous coverage.
